Oliver Baumann, 36, was originally scheduled to be Germany's starting goalkeeper at the World Cup, and Alexander Nouvelle, 29, was his backup. But at the last minute, Julian Nagelsmann decided to put Manuel Neuer, 40, ahead of the two.
The move and its delivery method sparked strong opposition from outside. Internal conflict was also reportedly serious. Goalkeeper coach Andreas Kronenberg was on the verge of resignation because Nagelsmann skipped him and made the decision on his own. Kronenberg had already promised Baumann and Nouvell, who were originally scheduled to be starting members, roles at the World Cup.
Neuer wanted to leave Nouvelle out of the team.
Furthermore, Neuer reportedly agreed to return only on the condition of naming Jonas Urbihi (22) instead, with the exception of Neuer. Nagelsmann then compromised with Neuer to use Urbihi as his fourth goalkeeper after Neuer.
Neuer and Nubel were at odds. Nubel later moved to Besiktas in Turkiye. Neuer was unwilling to recognize Nubel as his successor, and in various circumstances, this almost resulted in him missing out on participating in the World Cup
