Spain's national team coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed strong support for referee François LeTexier's decision in the match between Argentina and Egypt to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.
Argentina turned the tables with back-to-back goals from Christian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernandez to advance to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 comeback. However, Egypt strongly protested, saying that two important decisions during the match were made against them.
The biggest controversy was in the 13th minute of the second half. Egypt scored, but the goal was canceled after VAR review for a foul against Lisandro Martinez early in the attack's development.
Egypt also claimed a penalty should have been declared, saying Julián Álvarez fouled Mohamed Salah at the end of the match. However, no penalty was awarded, and soon after, Argentina scored the winner after a quick counterattack.
Egyptian players and their coaching staff, unable to control their emotions after the match, claimed the tournament was "rigged in Argentina's favor." In response, FIFA's referee chairman Pierluigi Collina strongly denied the allegations.
"Of course, constructive discussions about decisions are always part of football. But baseless accusations have no place in our sport. No one should doubt the integrity of the FIFA World Cup squad. If that happens, it can lead to threats to referees and their families. It is never right."

De La Fuente "I don't understand what the controversy is"
Didier Deschamps, the coach of France's national team, also disagreed with his criticism of fellow Frenchman LeTexier and praised his refereeing operation ahead of the quarterfinal against Morocco. And Spain's Luis de la Fuente, who is set to play against Belgium in the quarterfinals, also expressed his opinion.
De La Fuente told DAZN.
"Honestly, I don't understand why you're asking me about the Argentina-Egypt match referee controversy. Where on earth did that come from?"
He then fully supported LeTexier's decision.
"I watched the game, and I think the referee has judged the whole situation correctly. "On the contrary, I would like to congratulate him. Every decision he made was accurate."
Whether or not the World Cup final will be assigned has not been decided yet
It is not yet known whether LeTexier is currently among the candidates for the 2026 World Cup final at New York and New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
The 37-year-old LeTexier, who serves as an elite FIFA and UEFA referee, is one of the four referees responsible for the quarterfinals of the tournament. However, he will not be in charge of the semifinals, and the final and third-place referees have yet to be assigned.
Meanwhile, Frenchman Clement Turpin, like LeTexier, will referee Norway's quarterfinal match against England in Miami on Saturday
